Last week, Joanna interviewed her colleague Bart-Jan about the things that are driving him to become a good UX/UI designer and what he learned so far at UX coach. Read on to get to know Bart-Jan as a motivated UX/UI designer, who started with an art degree at Sint Lucas School of art and who grows at top speed in our UX design projects. Or read about his valuable lessons for novice UX designers who want to find a first job als UX/UI designer.

What inspired you to become a UX/UI designer, and how did you get started in the field?

"I originally had an art background, with the goal to do something practical with it. So I thought long and hard about what to do with my career. UX/UI design made the most sense for me, as it combines the art/design side with problem-thinking, piecing things together and thinking through solutions."

What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced as a UX/UI designer, and how have you overcome them?

"The learning curve from designing on your own, to working in a team, with different insights. Getting feedback from clients and your coach. But I overcame this with effective communication and keeping your mind set in one positive direction, towards the accomplishment of the goal."

Can you share a specific project or experience that taught you a valuable lesson about UX design?

"There was this one project that I’ve worked on that taught me that you have to be flexible with your mindset, because the client can and may change their perspective and mind on certain things. And sometimes, you will find yourself in a position where you’ll need to pick and choose what you have to and can do, based on the constraints of time and client budget."

Do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in UX design? If so, how?

"Yes, always. The reason why is, because it’s a very fluid business and things often change, and sometimes quickly in the industry. I use Youtube (videos and live streams) and UX Beers (an event in Antwerp for UX designers to stay connected), along with updates from the Figma community to stay up to date."

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in the field of UX design?

"I would advise you to create a map for yourself, gather information about what you think are good UX/UI design practices and designs. Network as often as you can with others in the field. And make a summary for yourself to stay motivated, e.g. write down what is important to you as a UX/UI designer in the field."
