What is the hourly rate of a web designer? Or, what is the price of a UX/UI designer? As a digital project manager, product owner, marketing manager or developer, you probably now recognize the importance of a positive user experience. Today, experienced web designers are hard to find, as all digital agencies, the government, but also large banks and insurance companies fish in the same small fiver. And that of course affects the price.

In this article, we will not discuss the wage costs of a web designer who works as an employee (for example, take a look at Glassdoor's report ), but we will discuss the hourly rates of UX designers in Belgium. So that you can take this into account if you want to estimate the price of a new website (or a redesign), and if you want to work with external designers.

What is the hourly rate of a web designer?

To answer that question, it is important to understand that nowadays you can divide web designers, also in Belgium, into different types of designers. Think of the following profiles:

UX designers, who design the 'architecture' of a website, such as the user flows, the navigation, the required content and components, the labels and titles. So that users can easily find their way and reach their goal quickly.
UI designers, who mainly determine the graphical, also visual, design of the website. For example, they look at your style guide and apply it to new or existing web pages, or they optimize components so that the user experience is optimal.
Service designers, who work more broadly than your website or application, and also look at the services you provide, and whether your organization and processes are aligned with this .

Senior UX designer or service designer

Based on conversations with fellow designers, the maximum hourly rates that government agencies charge for a tender and the prices that customers pay us, I know that an experienced UX or service designer in Belgium has an hourly rate of between 70 and 100 euros, excluding VAT.

So you can expect a lot for that. An experienced designer has between 10 and 20 years of experience (these professions do not exist in Belgium for much longer) and can help you with, for example:

mapping the pain points in an existing design or existing services,
collect user data for making informed design decisions,
setting up user research, such as a usability test,
explain why a proposed design or architecture is a good solution to convince stakeholders,
organizing and moderating and workshops with clients or stakeholders,
devising a UX or service design project plan.

Junior UX/UI designer

For a younger or less experienced UX/UI designer, the hourly rates are between 40 and 60 euros excluding VAT. I deduce this from the prices that freelancers ask on freelance platforms, such as Freelancer.be, but also from a rate survey by freelance network . For an hourly rate between 40 and 60 euros, you should rather think of executive work, such as
:

developing wireframes for landing pages and detail pages
applying design guidelines to requested features or pages
applying brand guidelines to existing or new pages
functional analysis of designed features
