UX stands for User Experience, hence UX design stands for User Experience Design. The reality is that there is no simple answer to this question, as there’s no commonly accepted definition for UX design. The field itself has various dimensions, including visual design, interaction design, usability, information architecture, and human-computer interaction. Of course, most people would agree and simply put it that UX refers to the interaction between users towards a product or service. But there’s so much more to it than that. UX design, in my opinion, is like a mix of psychology (focusing on human behavior, how the mind works, emotions & feelings, etc.) and being really good at making strong, educated guesses.
What is the meaning of UX or UX design?
Laura Klein, author of Build Better Products and UX for Lean Startups, defines UX as the process used to determine what the experience for a user could be like, when they interact with your product or service. Jason Ogle, founder and host of the User Defenders Podcast, believes that UX design is about using empathy to solve human and business problems, in order to remove obstacles and friction; so users can more easily reach their goals in a delightful manner. Tomer Sharon, author of Validating Product Ideas through Lean Research, agrees that UX design is not only a science, but also an art of creating positive emotions for people who interact with products and services. On top of that, Steve Portigal, author of Interviewing Users adds that UX design is the combination of a creative and analytical process to determine what a website, device, or a piece of software is going to be and do for people.
UX is more than good usability and there’s a number of elements that go into the field and its designers. It’s about the people, taking into account their wants, needs, behaviors, and the context in which they will use a product or service. Also, taking their needs at the core of the design, learning about their expectation, and potentially exceeding them. For good UX implies a number of factors, and with all this in mind, it can be easy to feel overwhelm. However, it’s an essential part of the success of a product, service, and/or business.
